Spartan Baseball did something Monday night that is hasn’t done in some time…that is to beat the region’s top seed Newnan Cougars 11-5.

Freshman Tristan Jensen earned the victory on the hill for Royal and Silver. He went four innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking zero. Sophomores Michael Braswell and Michael Herrmann entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Newnan got things moving in the second inning, when three runs crossed the plate. Down three, the Spartans came to the plate and, led by singles from Freshman Garret DeHart, Sophomore Michael Herrmann and Jensen, doubles by Junior Catcher Dominic Rutigliano, Junior Third Baseman Ethan Mack, and Junior Left Fielder Andrew Whitcher, put a 10 run “dagger to the heart” in the top of the third.

In that frame Rutigliano doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs. An error by the Cougars allowed another run to score. Mack doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. Whitcher reached on a dropped third strike, Herrmann singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, and Jensen singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run.

The Silver and Royal tallied ten hits in the game. Rutigliano, Braswell, and Jensen each collected two hits to lead the Spartan offense. Solid defense, once again, ensure the Cougar’s door of opportunity was slammed closed as the Good Guys did not commit a single error in the field.

The Spartans take on region foes East Coweta (away) on Wednesday and Pebblebrook at home on Friday as a part of Spartan Baseball Alumni Night at the Spartan Baseball Complex and Historic Lattanzi Field. Game time is 5:55.
