Spartan Baseball Takes Victory Over Wheeler In Pitcher's Duel and Secures Third Place Region 2-7A Finish

18 Apr 2019 by Coach Searcy

Both teams were strong on the hill Wednesday, but the Royal and Silver defeated Wheeler 2-1 to claim 3rd place in Region 2-7A, the highest finish for the Campbell Baseball Program in 20 years, and a consecutive trip to the GHSA State Playoffs!

Wheeler got on the board in the top of the second inning scoring one run on a single by Will Mahoney, one of only three Wheeler hits on the night given up by Spartan pitching.

That 1-0 lead would hold for the Wildcats until the bottom of the 6th. In the bottom of the 6th frame, the Royal and Silver would capitalize on a one out single by Sophomore Second Baseman Michael Herrmann, who led the Spartan offense with three hits on the night, and a double to left by Sophomore Shortstop Michael Braswell. With two outs, runners on second and third, and two strikes on Freshman First Baseman Tristan Jensen, history would begin to be written when a flare off the young man’s bat went over the heads of the infield, brought in to prevent a run, found its way into the center field grass scoring both Herrmann and Braswell. The Good Guys went up 2-1 headed into the top of the 7th.

The lead would hold, despite loading bases with Wildcats, when a lazy fly ball fell into the glove of Sophomore Center Fielder Owen Wright for out number three, preserving a hard fought and HUGE win for the Silver and Royal.

Sophomore Pitcher Andrew Herrmann had another impressive outing for the Spartans going six innings, allowing only one run on three hits, striking out four and walking zero. Sophomore Michael Braswell came in to close, recording the last three outs to earn the save.

The Spartans have a non-region doubleheader on Saturday April 20th at the Spartan Baseball Complex and Historic Lattanzi Field against Marietta and South Cobb. Game 1 first pitch is at 12 noon. Game 2 begins at 3:00.

The first round of the 2019 GHSA State Playoffs begin April 24th. The Guys in Royal and Silver will be taking on Region 3-7A number 2 seed, North Paulding Wolfpack at North Paulding HS. Game times TBD.
