Spartan Baseball goes undefeated, taking out George Walton Academy, Union Grove, and Creekview, in the GA Dugout Club Invitational at Lake Point in Emerson, winning the Bud Theodocian Division Bracket.

The Spartans defeated George Walton Academy 5-2 on Friday. Campbell got things moving in the first inning, when John Anagnostis doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring Owen Wright who walked earlier in the inning. The Royal & Silver put up three runs in the second inning, led by Andrew Whitcher and Garrett DeHart, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs. Anagnostis went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Spartans in hits.

Sophomore Tristan Jensen is credited with the win, lasting four and a third innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out two. Freshman Ryan Gold threw two and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen. Gold recorded the last eight outs to earn the save.

On Saturday, the Spartans grabbed a late lead and defeated Union Grove 6-5. Campbell got things moving in the second inning, when two Spartans walked and eventually scored on a passed ball and sacrifice fly. The Silver & Royal were down 2 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Senior Hassan Goggins walked to lead off the inning. Michael Herrmann reached on an error. Garret DeHart hustled out a bunt single. Junior Michael Braswell reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Goggins. Herrmann scored on a Dominic Rutigliano fielder’s choice. Before the inning would end, Senior Ethan Mack would single in another run putting the Spartans up for good at 6 to 5.

Michael Braswell started the game for Spartans (Varsity). He allowed two hits and one run over three innings, striking out five and walking zero. Duncan Santos threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. Freshman Alex Karst is got the win on the mound when he came in to throw pitched three and a third innings in relief, allowing zero runs on one hit, striking out four and walking zero. Garrett DeHart, Hassan Goggins, and Mack each had a hit to lead the Spartans in hitting.

In the night cap, brothers Andrew and Michael Herrmann teamed up on the mound to shut out Creekview 2-0 in extra innings. Junior Andrew Herrmann started the game for Spartans. He surrendered zero runs on three hits over four innings, striking out eight and walking one. Junior Michael Herrmann got the win, allowing only one hit and no runs over five innings, striking out three and walking zero.

The game was tied after 8 innings of great pitching and defense on both sides. However, in the top of the 9th inning, the Spartans would rise up and manufacture 2 runs to take the lead and after a scoreless bottom of the 9th, the win.

The top of the 9th inning was led by Michael Herrmann hustling out an infield hit on a ground ball to second. Sophomore Garrett DeHart placed down a perfect bunt to move Herrmann to second. Junior Michael Braswell would single to left center, scoring Herrmann and the first run of the game. Braswell would steal second and third on consecutive pitches. He would then score on a Corian Davis single to center.

When all was said and done late Saturday night, Spartan Baseball would end the week 4-0, defeating Marietta on Wednesday and three other very good baseball teams, as well as winning the Bud Theodocian Division at the 2020 GA Dugout Club Invitational.
